The holiday spirit is in the air and what better way to celebrate than with some classic holiday tunes. You know, the ones that just make your heart smile, the songs you listen to every holiday season religiously, the songs that considered staples, and no one can tell you differently. Yes! I am talking about those songs. One of the most iconic Christmas songs just recently celebrated 50 years since it was first recorded. The song I’m referring to is This Christmas by Donny Hathaway.
Released December 9, 1970, this classic Christmas song didn’t initially gain much traction. It wasn’t until the song was re-released in 1991 for the Soul Christmas album, that it instantly became a household and holiday favorite. This song has been covered by so many of our favorite 90’s R&B artists to include: Dru, Hill Destiny’s Child, Usher, The Braxtons, Mary J. Blige, SWV, Faith Evans, Joe, Lalah Hathaway and so many more. While these artists have taken the song and put their own spin on it, there is nothing that brings you pure joy like the original. It makes you feel warm and fuzzy like fresh baked cookies and a cup of hot chocolate.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic song, a new animated video has been released in its honor. This is something I am sure would have made Donny Hathaway proud. Unfortunately, Hathaway passed before he could see the success of this song. While he may not have gotten to experience the magnitude of this song, his spirit lives with us every holiday season. We are eternally grateful that for the impact that this song continues to have, the lives it continues to touch, and the abundance of joy we feel every time we hear it. Cheers to another 50 years of This Christmas.Leave a comment
