Cover Story | Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to check out Zumble’s latest short film, Height. It is an independent project written by Jason Gray and co-directed by Jason and Richard Gray (from Zumble) and was receently selected to the 2021 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival (congratulations to everryone involved!). It follows Jaxon (Jason) and his friends Dray (Brandon McKinnie) and Cleon (Richard) as they clown on, debate with, and encourage one another about the important things in life like 90’s culture and women. Jaxon is trying to overcome his insecurities about his short stature and trepidations regarding online dating, which has gotten in the way of his love life. While his friends have been trying to get him out of his comfort zone, it takes a random blind date for him to get his swagger back.
Height is a mixture of funny moments, sound advice, and references from some of our favorite movies, tv shows, and music. Some referneces in the film are easy to spot, but there are plenty of others that you can miss if you’re not paying attention. But whether it is a debate about which is better: Dru Hill’s “In My Bed”, or Jodeci’s “Forever my Lady”, or a “You so almondy” reference (from the “D.M.V. Blues” episode of Martin) that all the true fans will remember, or even some “Dwayne Wayne” style flip up glasses, Height covers all your nostalgic needs. It also features original music from Bad Milli (a remake of Skee-Lo’s “I Wish”) that is the “icing on the cake” for the cultural comedy.
